The resolution did not grant Palestine full UN membership but acknowledged that Palestine meets the requirements to join.
Furthermore, Palestine was granted rights and privileges including a seat in the UN General Assembly starting September 2024. However, they do not have voting rights.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas stated that the resolution's passage demonstrates the world's support for the rights and freedoms of the Palestinian people and opposition to the Israeli occupation.
However, *Al Jazeera*'s senior political analyst, Marwan Bishara, believes the vote will not make a significant difference for Gaza.
"This is more symbolic; it's a significant milestone for Palestine in achieving status on the world stage," said Marwan on Friday, May 10, 2024.
Palestine's push for full UN membership comes after seven months of Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip.
