Jambi Province, Holder of the Most Customary Forest Certificates

Customary Forests (CF) are included in the Social Forestry (SF) program scheme. Customary forests are located in the territories of indigenous communities, groups of people who have traditionally lived in a specific area with a way of life based on customary law. Indigenous communities have a strong bond with the environment.

Because CFs are located in the territories of indigenous communities, the Decree (SK) for CFs constitutes recognition and protection of the indigenous community's rights to the customary forest. The SK is granted to the customary community to manage the CF for production, protection, and conservation functions.

By the end of 2019, 82 SKs had been issued. The highest number of SKs was held by indigenous communities in Jambi Province, with 28 SKs. This was followed by West Kalimantan with 10 SKs, Banten with 6 SKs, and South Sulawesi with 5 SKs. Other indigenous communities holding CF SKs are spread across Sumatra, Kalimantan, Java, Sulawesi, Maluku, and Papua.
