According to the World Bank's *The Atlas of Sustainable Development Goals 2023*, Indonesia produced approximately 65.2 million tons of waste in 2020.

This figure makes Indonesia the 5th largest waste producer globally.

However, considering its population, Indonesia generates an average of 250 kilograms (kg) of waste per capita per year.

Indonesia's per capita waste volume falls into the "middle class" globally, ranking 128th out of 211 countries surveyed by the World Bank, but still the 5th largest in Southeast Asia.

In 2020, the ASEAN member state with the highest per capita waste production was Brunei Darussalam. Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore followed, as detailed in the graph above.

Nevertheless, the World Bank predicts that global waste growth in the coming decades will be dominated by middle-income countries.

"Historically, global waste growth has come from upper-middle-income and high-income countries. But now, waste production in high-income countries is no longer increasing rapidly," they said.

"Waste from upper-middle-income countries is projected to increase by about 70%, and waste from lower-middle-income countries is projected to more than double by 2050," they continued.
