Lewotobi Laki-laki Volcano Erupts Sunday Night; Alert Level Raised to Highest

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Sunday (14/1/2024) at 00.35 WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 12 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be approximately 700 meters above the peak or 2,284 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the north. The eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcanic activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level IV (Alert). Seismic observations on January 14, 2024, from 18.00-23.59 WITA showed 6 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 29.6-47.3 millimeters and durations of 61-126 seconds.

Then, there were 7 rockfall quakes with amplitudes of 10.5-37 mm and durations of 45-84 seconds, and 1 low-frequency quake with an amplitude of 33.3 millimeters and a duration of 32 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to carry out any activities within a 4-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and a sectoral 5-kilometer radius to the Northwest-North and Northeast.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 51 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara has had the most eruptions with 20 eruptions.
