Lewotobi Laki-laki Volcano Erupts Friday Morning; Alert Level Raised

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Friday, February 2, 2024, at 08:25 WITA. This marks the second eruption in the past week.

According to information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed at approximately 700 meters above the peak, or 2,284 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray in color with thick intensity towards the north. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 47.3 millimeters and a duration of 141.04 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity from 00:00 to 06:00 WITA on February 2, 2024, showed 17 volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 4.4-29.6 mm and durations of 42-147 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 5 low-frequency earthquakes with amplitudes of 4.4-29.6 millimeters and durations of 12-49 seconds, and 1 hybrid/multiple-phase earthquake with an amplitude of 4.4 millimeters, an s-p time of 0.9 seconds, and a duration of 11 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists to refrain from any activity within a 4-kilometer radius of the eruption center and within a sectoral radius of 5 kilometers in the North-Northeast direction and 6 kilometers in the Northeast sector.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 142 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara has experienced the most eruptions, with 51 recorded events.
