Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again This Afternoon, Ash Column Reaches Approximately 700 Meters

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Sunday (14/1/2024) at 2:59 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 15 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 700 meters above the peak (2,284 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the north. The eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level IV (Alert). Seismic observations on January 14, 2024, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WITA showed 9 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 21.7-47.3 millimeters and durations of 26-63 seconds.

Then, there was 1 pyroclastic flow quake with an amplitude of 47.3 mm and a duration of 283 seconds, and 16 rockfall quakes with amplitudes of 14.8-47.3 mm and durations of 30-134 seconds.

PVMBG urges people around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to carry out any activities within a 4-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and a sectoral 5-kilometer radius to the Northwest-North and Northeast.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 56 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara has had the most eruptions with 23 eruptions.
