Mount Ibu Erupts Again This Morning (Friday, May 17, 2024)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Friday (May 17, 2024) at 06.27 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 10 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be approximately 400 meters above the peak (1,725 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be white to gray in color with moderate to thick intensity towards the southeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 36 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ibu is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on May 17, 2024, from 00.00 to 06.00 WIT showed 69 instances of puffing tremors with amplitudes of 2-25 millimeters and durations of 15-50 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 151 shallow volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 2-14 millimeters and durations of 4-14 seconds, and 11 deep volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 2-28 millimeters, s-p 0.5-2.9 seconds, and durations of 4-13 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 7 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 700 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java experienced the most eruptions (245 eruptions), while Mount Ibu erupted 87 times.
