Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB): Flood Trends in Indonesia Show a Decreasing Trend Over the Past Three Years

Natural disasters, particularly floods, have frequently struck Indonesia for decades. However, according to the Indonesian Disaster Information Data (DIBI), the trend of flooding in Indonesia has decreased over the past three years.

In the last almost decade, the most flood events in Indonesia occurred in 2020, totaling 1,531 incidents. The number of flood incidents decreased to 1,181 in 2021.

Furthermore, the number of flood incidents decreased again to 585 in 2022. Most recently, from January 1st to February 20th, 2023, there have been 21 flood incidents.

By province, Bangka Belitung experienced the most flood disasters this year, with 9 incidents. The next highest number of flood disasters occurred in Central Java, with 7 incidents.

The following provinces experienced floods in Indonesia from January 1st to February 20th, 2023:

* Bangka Belitung: 9 incidents
* Central Java: 7 incidents
* East Java: 2 incidents
* Central Sulawesi: 1 incident
* South Sumatra: 1 incident
* North Sulawesi: 1 incident

According to the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) website, floods can be caused by high rainfall that is not adequately balanced by soil absorption. Floods can also occur in the form of tidal flooding (rob) or flash floods (bandang).

Therefore, we must be prepared to anticipate all types of floods. In addition, we also need to anticipate flooding by maintaining the surrounding environment, namely by not throwing garbage into drains or rivers, which can obstruct waterways.
