Mount Dukono Erupts Again This Morning, Ash Reaches Approximately 1,000 Meters

Mount Dukono in North Maluku erupted again on Friday, May 17, 2024, at 09:28 WIT. This is the second eruption in the last week.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed at approximately 1,000 meters above the peak (2,087 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the east. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 34 millimeters and a duration of 65.79 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Dukono's activity level is at Level II (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on May 17, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIT showed 16 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 4-14 millimeters and durations of 29.45-82.15 seconds.

Furthermore, there was 1 local tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 10 millimeters (s-p not observed) and a duration of 28.54 seconds, and 1 continuous tremor with an amplitude of 0.5-2 millimeters, predominantly 1 millimeter.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Dukono and visitors/tourists to refrain from activities, climbing, and approaching the Malupang Warirang Crater within a 3-kilometer radius.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 707 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (250 times), while Mount Dukono erupted 20 times.
