Central Java, Province with the Most Extreme Weather in the Last Decade

According to data from the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Central Java experienced the highest number of extreme weather events in Indonesia between 2014 and 2023, with 2,361 incidents.

"This means that in one year there were more than 200 extreme weather events in Central Java, almost one event every two days," said Abdul Muhari, Head of the BNPB's Data, Information, and Disaster Communication Center, in a press conference on the BNPB YouTube channel on Wednesday, February 26, 2024.

BNPB defines extreme weather as unusual weather conditions, such as strong winds, tornadoes, extreme heat, and so on.

Here is a complete list of the 10 provinces with the most extreme weather events during the 2014-2023 period:

1. Central Java: 2,361 events
2. West Java: 2,245 events
3. East Java: 1,320 events
4. South Sulawesi: 651 events
5. Aceh: 495 events
6. West Sumatra: 434 events
7. North Sumatra: 338 events
8. Yogyakarta Special Region: 254 events
9. East Nusa Tenggara: 251 events
10. South Kalimantan: 251 events

At the beginning of this year, specifically on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, a tornado struck five sub-districts in Sumedang and Bandung Regencies, West Java.

The tornado's wind speed reached 36.8 kilometers per hour, resulting in 12 injuries, 74 people evacuated, and 1,359 people affected.

"In Bandung, around 400 houses were damaged, and in Sumedang, around 500 houses were damaged, with the majority of the damage being minor," said Abdul.
