Mount Dukono Erupts on Sunday Afternoon, Status Remains on Alert

Mount Dukono in North Maluku erupted again on Sunday, March 31, 2024, at 12:47 WIT. In the last week, Mount Dukono has erupted twice.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 1,250 meters above the peak or 2,337 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 18 millimeters and a duration of 56.56 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Dukono is at Level II (Alert). Observations of seismicity on March 31, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIT showed 10 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 4-34 millimeters and durations of 31.65-44.74 seconds.

Then, there were 9 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 4-34 millimeters, s-p 10.83-57.31 seconds, and durations of 61.02-163.21 seconds, as well as 1 continuous tremor with an amplitude of 1-4 millimeters, predominantly 2 millimeters.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Dukono and visitors/tourists not to conduct activities, climb, or approach the Malupang Warirang Crater within a 3-kilometer radius.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 460 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Marapi in West Sumatra had the most eruptions (153 eruptions), while Mount Dukono erupted 12 times.
