Mount Marapi Erupts in the Early Hours of Wednesday; Status Raised to Alert

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, at 04:19 WIB. In the last week, Mount Marapi has erupted 4 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the visual eruption was not observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 8.5 millimeters and a duration of 28 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Marapi's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on February 14, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIB showed 1 eruption/explosion with an amplitude of 29.9 millimeters and a duration of 28 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 31 tremors with amplitudes of 1-9.6 millimeters and durations of 22-202 seconds, and 2 deep volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 2.2-4.3 millimeters, s-p 2.3-2.6 seconds, and durations of 12-21 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Marapi and climbers/visitors/tourists not to enter or carry out activities within a 4.5-kilometer radius of the eruption center (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 196 volcanic eruptions/explosions throughout Indonesia. Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara had the most eruptions (57 times), while Mount Marapi erupted 51 times.
