Indonesia's Most Eruptive Volcanoes as of Early March 2024

According to Magma Indonesia data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), from the beginning of January to March 8, 2024, there were 393 recorded volcanic eruptions nationwide.

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra had the most eruptions, with 134 recorded.

Next is Mount Semeru in East Java, which recorded 110 eruptions during the same period.

On Friday (March 8, 2024) at 05:42 WIB, Mount Semeru erupted volcanic ash to a height of approximately 600 meters above the peak, or about 4,276 meters above sea level.

This eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 millimeters and a duration of 132 seconds. The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the southeast and south into the sea.

Mount Semeru currently remains on alert status (Level III), so Magma Indonesia recommends that people not carry out activities in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, 13 kilometers from the eruption center.

"Beyond that distance, people should not carry out activities within 500 meters of the riverbank along Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for expansion of pyroclastic flows and lava flows up to 17 km from the peak," wrote Magma Indonesia in its report.

In addition, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has had 57 eruptions, followed by Mount Ibu and Mount Ili Lewotolok with 43 eruptions each, and Mount Dukono with 6 eruptions from the beginning of the year to March 8, 2024.
