Mount Ibu Erupts Again Early This Morning (Sunday, April 7, 2024)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Sunday (April 7, 2024) at 01:38 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 4 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to reach 2,000 meters above the peak (3,325 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with moderate to thick intensity towards the southwest and west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 98 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level II (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on April 7, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIT showed 7 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 15-28 millimeters and durations of 24-75 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 120 puffing quakes with amplitudes of 2-14 millimeters and durations of 8-45 seconds, and 236 shallow volcanic quakes with amplitudes of 2-16 millimeters and durations of 6-12 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 2.0-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 3.5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 492 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Marapi in West Sumatra had the most eruptions (160 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 57 times.
