A report by the Ministry of Forestry (Kemenhut) in the *2024 Ministry of Forestry Statistics* reveals that the total cumulative area of forest land utilized for non-mining activities across 10 provinces on Sumatra Island reached nearly 37 thousand hectares (ha) by 2024.
Within this area, 223 companies or activities are operating.
Riau is the province with the largest utilization of forest areas for non-mining activities in Sumatra, reaching 24.58 thousand hectares. There are 13 operating companies or units.
Over the past five years, the cumulative forest area utilized for non-mining activities in Riau has been considered "stable" at the 24 thousand hectare level.
The second province is North Sumatra (Sumut), with 4.84 thousand hectares. Although its area is smaller than Riau's, the number of units operating on Sumut's land is significantly higher, reaching 81.
Similarly, the cumulative area utilized in North Sumatra over the past five years has shown a quite aggressive increase.
Specifically, it was 3.18 thousand by 2020; 3.89 thousand by 2021; 4.37 thousand by 2022; 4.45 thousand by 2023; and 4.84 thousand ha by 2024.
The third province is South Sumatra (Sumsel), with an area of 1.98 thousand hectares and 25 operating units by 2024.
The province with the lowest utilization area on this list is the Bangka Belitung Islands, at 139.25 hectares by 2024.
