Based on a July 2025 survey by the Seventeen Choice Pioneer Foundation (PP17), several environmental policies require immediate government implementation according to Indonesian youth.
The most pressing issue deemed urgent is forest-related policy, with the following details:
1. Protecting forest areas from deforestation, fires, and land conversion: 53%
2. Sustainable, healthy, and diverse food systems: 38%
3. Recognizing customary community rights to land management: 34%
4. Developing new and renewable energy (EBT): 31%
5. Addressing climate change through adaptation efforts: 30%
6. Relaxing environmental impact assessment (AMDAL) requirements: 24%
7. Expanding mining management permits: 16%
8. Don't know: 2%
Based on these findings, PP17 considers the Forestry Bill relevant to youth aspirations.
"Especially since 53% want the government to immediately implement policies that protect forest areas," PP17 stated in its National Benchmark Survey.
PP17 conducted this survey from July 10-17, 2025, using computer-assisted self-interviewing (CASI) methodology with 1,342 respondents aged 17-35 from across Indonesia.
According to PP17, several bills in the 2025 National Legislation Program (Prolegnas) can strengthen environmental protection efforts.
First, the Forestry Bill will redefine forests, forest areas, and customary forests, leading to more comprehensive vegetation protection.
"Simultaneously, this change also formulates the economic and social utilization of forests in line with environmental sustainability aspects," they said.
Second, the Food Bill will regulate Indonesia's food process from production to consumption.
These regulations, according to PP17, can guarantee food security, farmers' welfare, and encourage agricultural activities to consider ecological aspects.
Third, the Customary Community Bill will fully protect and recognize the rights of customary communities, including their territories, laws, cultural identity, and guarantee meaningful participation for customary communities.
