Indonesia's waste is projected to continuously increase in the coming years, exceeding the capacity of existing final disposal sites (TPA).

In the report, Bappenas estimates that the national waste volume will reach 63 million tons in 2025, and continue to rise to 82.2 million tons in 2045.

"The amount of waste generated is projected to increase under a business-as-usual scenario, in line with the increase in national GDP," stated Bappenas in its report.

"This increase in waste generation needs to be anticipated and managed, considering that under a business-as-usual scenario, the projected capacity of national TPAs is expected to be full by 2028 or even sooner," they said.

Bappenas also predicts that Indonesia's waste management capacity will decline in the coming decades.

Under a business-as-usual scenario, Indonesia is estimated to be able to manage 59.70% of national waste in 2025. However, by 2045, this capacity is predicted to fall to only 9.39%.

"This decline is occurring in line with the increasing population, which is causing higher waste production. In the projection towards 2045, it is estimated that managed waste will continue to decrease," said Bappenas in its report.

"With this downward trend, solutions in waste management are needed. Sustainable strategies must be implemented to reduce the amount of waste generated; with appropriate measures, it is hoped that the negative impacts of unmanaged waste can be mitigated and environmental quality maintained in the future," they said.
