Ten Provinces with Critically Degraded Land; West Java Has the Largest Area

A report by Indonesia's Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reveals that 4.04 million hectares (ha) of land were classified as critically degraded in 2022.

West Java had the largest area of critically degraded land in Indonesia, totaling 432,000 ha in 2022. An additional 397,510 ha were classified as critically degraded. The total area of critically and severely degraded land in the province reached 829,550 ha.

North Maluku had the second-largest area of critically degraded land (399,660 ha), followed by West Sumatra (314,600 ha).

No critically or severely degraded land was recorded in Jakarta and the newly established provinces of West Papua Daya, South Papua, Central Papua, and Highland Papua.
