Most Indonesians Consider Climate Change a Serious and Threatening Issue

According to a report by the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute, a majority, or 71.7%, of Indonesians consider climate change a serious issue with the potential to threaten people's lives. This percentage is the third highest in Southeast Asia.

Vietnam holds the first position, with 80% of its population considering climate change a serious and life-threatening problem. The Philippines follows with 77.9% expressing a similar view.

Meanwhile, 27.2% of Indonesian respondents considered climate change an important issue requiring continuous monitoring. Only 1.1% of Indonesians believed climate change lacks a scientific basis.

The report also indicates that flooding is the most serious threat of climate change in Indonesia, with 89.1% of domestic respondents stating so.

As many as 69.6% of Indonesians consider rising sea levels a serious threat from climate change, while 64.1% cite landslides as a concern related to climate change.

The ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute report is based on an online survey conducted from June 11 to August 2, 2021. Approximately 610 respondents from 10 Southeast Asian countries participated and completed the survey.
