Indonesia's Social Forestry Reaches 7.21 Million Hectares in 2024: Here's the Growth Trend

Data from the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) received by *Databoks* shows that the area of social forestry in Indonesia reached 7.21 million hectares (ha) as of August 2024.

The increase in the area of social forestry fluctuates annually.

The KLHK accumulated an area of social forestry of 437,300 ha from 2007 to 2014. A year later, the increase in social forestry area reached 106,600 ha.

The figure then increased significantly to 684,240 ha in 2017. In 2018, the addition even reached 1.06 million ha.

A fairly aggressive increase also occurred in 2019, amounting to 1.74 million ha. This was the highest increase in the last decade.

However, the increase in social forestry area dropped drastically in 2020, suspected to be due to the impact of restrictions on activities caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Expansion continued until it became resilient in 2023, achieving an increase of 827,820 ha. The latest data as of August 2024 shows a further increase of 1.07 million ha.

In addition, the KLHK calculated the area of conservation partnerships at 321,830 ha and productive forestry partnership (KKPP) at 9,580 ha.

Therefore, the total area of community-managed land access amounts to 7.55 million ha. This management involves 1.36 million households (KK) with 10,850 SK units.

For information, the social forestry program is a sustainable forest management system located in state forest areas, customary forests, or customary rights forests, implemented by local communities or based on customary law.
