According to data from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), Indonesia generated approximately 19.56 million tons of waste throughout 2023.
However, this waste data is only from 96 regencies/cities, and therefore does not reflect the total national waste volume.
Of the available waste data from 96 regencies/cities, the majority, or 41.4%, consists of food waste.
There is also a significant amount of plastic waste at 18.6%, wood/twigs/leaves at 11.5%, and paper/cardboard at 10.5%.
Meanwhile, waste consisting of rubber/leather, cloth, glass, metal, and other materials is less, as shown in the graph.
When viewed by source, the majority of waste in Indonesia comes from households, with a proportion of 39.1%.
Then there is waste from traditional markets with a proportion of 20.4%, and business centers at 17.8%.
Meanwhile, waste from special/industrial/commercial areas, offices, public facilities, and other sources is smaller, with proportions of less than 10% each.
