Mount Marapi Erupts Wednesday Morning, Status Raised to Alert

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, at 09:29 WIB (Western Indonesian Time). In the last week, Mount Marapi has erupted 6 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the visual eruption was not observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 14 millimeters and a duration of 37 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Marapi's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on February 14, 2024, from 00:00 to 06:00 WIB, showed 2 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 7.5-8.5 millimeters and durations of 28-54 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 7 tremor quakes with amplitudes of 1.9-6.6 millimeters and durations of 54-98 seconds, and 1 local tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 1.3 millimeters, S-P 7.7 seconds, and a duration of 26 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Marapi and climbers/visitors/tourists to not enter and refrain from activities within a 4.5-kilometer radius of the eruption center (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 198 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara had the most eruptions (57 times), while Mount Marapi erupted 53 times.
