Mount Marapi Erupts Again This Morning, Volcanic Ash Reaches Approximately 1,300 Meters

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Sunday (14/1/2024) at 06.21 WIB. In the last week, Mount Marapi has erupted 13 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to reach 1,300 meters above the peak or 4,191 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the northwest. The eruption of Mount Marapi was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Marapi is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on January 14, 2024, from 00.00-06.00 WIB showed 4 volcanic gas emissions with amplitudes of 1-1.6 millimeters and durations of 33-102 seconds.

Then, there were 2 local tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 2-31 millimeters, s-p 1.4-5.8 seconds, and durations of 17-19 seconds, as well as 1 continuous tremor with an amplitude of 0.5-1.5 millimeters, dominant at 1 millimeter.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Marapi and climbers/visitors/tourists not to enter and not to carry out activities within a 4.5-kilometer radius of the eruption center (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 53 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara had the most eruptions (21 times), while Mount Marapi erupted 18 times.
