PT Pertamina (Persero) sent a letter to the government requesting an increase in Total E&P Indonesie and Inpex Corporation's operating rights in the Mahakam Block to 39 percent, up from the previous 30 percent. Initially, the Mahakam Block was operated by Total E&P Indonesie, whose contract expired in 2017. The government then mandated Pertamina to become the operator of the Mahakam Block, with a contract running from January 1, 2018, to December 31, 2037.
The Mahakam Block is a mature field in its Phase IV. This condition naturally affects production performance. Gas production in the Mahakam Block peaked in 2009 at 2.8 BSCFD, while oil production peaked in 1977 at 230 KBOPD. Meanwhile, gas production from January to September 2017 reached 1.22 MMSCFD, and oil and condensate production reached 50,462 barrels per day (BPD).
In 2018, Mahakam Block gas production totaled 1,207 MMCFD, comprising 934 MMCFD from baseline production and 107 MMCFD from drilling and well intervention. Oil and condensate production in 2018 amounted to 36,168 BPD, consisting of 25,717 BPD from baseline production and 10,451 BPD from drilling and well intervention. Due to its age, baseline production has declined, with gas production in 2023 reaching only 193 MMFCD and oil production at 12,648 BPD.
