The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that methane emissions from the global energy sector reached 133.3 million tons in 2022.

The figures mentioned above represent only a small fraction of total global methane emissions.

"Methane emissions from abandoned oil and gas wells and coal mines are not included here. Data is unavailable in most countries," said the IEA.

The figures also do not include methane emissions from agricultural activities, livestock farming, waste decomposition, and natural methane produced by peatlands or wetlands.

According to the IEA, natural methane accounts for approximately 40% of total emissions, while anthropogenic methane from human activities (energy, agriculture, livestock, waste) accounts for 60%.

Overall, the IEA estimates that global methane emissions reached 580 million tons in 2022.
