According to World Nuclear Association data, throughout 2021, the United States generated 771.6 terawatt-hours (TWh) of nuclear electricity.
This achievement makes the United States the world's largest producer of nuclear energy.
Below the United States are China, France, Russia, South Korea, and Canada, with production figures as shown in the graph.
Ukraine also made it into the list of the top 10 largest nuclear electricity producers in 2021.
However, since early March 2022, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (NPP) in Ukraine has been forcibly seized by the Russian military.
"The Zaporizhzhia power plant in Ukraine is the first civilian nuclear power plant to be attacked by armed forces," the World Nuclear Association stated in its press release on Wednesday, August 10, 2022.
Before being taken over by Russia, the Zaporizhzhia NPP had 6 operating nuclear reactors. However, according to the World Nuclear Association on August 9, 2022, only 2 reactors were operational, so its energy production this year is expected to decline significantly.
