The soaring price of fossil fuel commodities is prompting many countries to seek alternative energy sources. Nuclear power plants (NPPs) are attracting significant attention.

Reuters notes that interest in nuclear energy is increasing in European and Asian countries. According to the World Nuclear Association (WNA), Asia is currently the region with the fastest-growing nuclear energy sector.

"About two-thirds of the nuclear reactors currently under construction worldwide are located in Asia," the WNA stated in its July 2022 report.

According to WNA data, China leads the way in Asia's nuclear energy development. In 2021, China had 54 operational nuclear reactors, 24 under construction, and 31 planned.

Meanwhile, in mid-2022, the Japanese government expressed its intention to restart its NPPs, most of which have been largely inactive since the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster.

The Japanese government also announced plans to develop new nuclear reactor technology to secure its domestic energy supply.

"All options for redesigning a stable energy supply must be secured. From that perspective, we will consider all options related to nuclear power," explained Japanese Economy Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura, as reported by The Guardian on Thursday, August 25, 2022.
