According to data from the International Energy Agency (IEA), there were 19.87 million barrels of oil per day shipped through the Strait of Hormuz in 2025.

"The sheer volume of oil that is exported via the Strait of Hormuz, and the limited options to bypass it, means that any disruption to flows would have huge consequences for world oil markets," said the IEA.

"A significant spike in oil prices would be inevitable and physical shortages would quickly develop if the disruption were to be prolonged," they said.
