Indonesia's Main Coal Export Destinations in 2024

According to a report by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Indonesia exported 405.76 million tons of coal in 2024. This volume increased by 6.86% year-on-year (yoy) compared to 2023.

Despite the increase in coal export volume, the export value in 2024 decreased by 11.85% (yoy) to US$30.48 billion, or approximately Rp496.36 trillion (assuming Rp16,280 per US$).

In 2024, India was the main destination for Indonesian coal exports, with a volume of 108.06 million tons, followed by China with 93.16 million tons.

However, India and China are expected to reduce their coal imports from Indonesia and switch to higher-calorie coal from other countries such as Russia, Mongolia, and South Africa.

Vasudev Pamnani, Director of I-Energy Natural Resources, explained that while higher-calorie coal is more expensive, it produces more energy.

“One million tons of higher-calorie coal can replace 1.2 million to 1.3 million tons, or even 1.5 million tons, from Indonesia,” said Vasudev, as reported by Katadata on Saturday (28/6/2025).

The following is a list of the top 10 destinations for Indonesian coal exports in 2024:

1. India: 108.06 million tons

2. China: 93.16 million tons

3. Philippines: 38.93 million tons

4. Japan: 28.99 million tons

5. Malaysia: 27.18 million tons

6. South Korea: 26.29 million tons

7. Taiwan: 15.31 million tons

8. Thailand: 13.83 million tons

9. Hong Kong: 3.96 million tons

10. Other countries: 49.99 million tons

In addition to the 10 countries listed above, Indonesia also exported coal to other countries with a combined volume of 49.99 million tons.
