Indonesia Has the World's Second-Largest Geothermal Capacity

As a country located in the Ring of Fire, Indonesia is endowed with abundant natural resources, one of which is geothermal energy. Indonesia possesses 40% of the world's geothermal reserves.

According to ThinkGeoEnergy data, Indonesia had the world's second-largest geothermal power plant (PLTP) capacity in 2020, reaching 2,133 megawatts (MW). This contributed 3.01% to the national electricity generation.

The United States holds the top spot with the world's largest PLTP capacity at 3,714 MW. The Philippines ranks third with a PLTP capacity of 1,918 MW.

Global geothermal power plant capacity reached 15,608 MW at the end of 2020. The pandemic situation slowed down the development of PLTP, from drilling and construction to deploying workers at project sites.

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) targets geothermal development to reach 9.3 GW by 2035. To optimize the existing potential, there is a plan to form a geothermal state-owned enterprise (BUMN) holding company comprising PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy, PT PLN Gas and Geothermal, and PT Geo Dipa Energi.
