According to data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Indonesia's refinery capacity reached 1.17 million barrels of oil per day in 2015. The Cilacap refinery contributed the most, reaching 348,000 barrels of oil per day. This figure is the largest compared to other oil refineries in the country.
Meanwhile, the second largest oil refinery capacity is Balikpapan, reaching 260,000 barrels per day, followed by Musi with a capacity of 127,300 barrels per day. The Cepu refinery has the lowest capacity, at 3,800 barrels per day.
The increasing number of motor vehicles has caused domestic oil consumption to continuously increase to 1.63 million barrels per day. To meet this need, the government must import oil from abroad, primarily from Singapore. To reduce reliance on oil imports, the government is collaborating with Saudi Aramco to increase the capacity of the Cilacap refinery to 370,000 barrels per day. The investment value is estimated to reach US$6 billion.
