Indonesia Became the World's Third Largest Biofuel Producer in 2022

Biofuel is a biofuel (BBN), derived from plant and animal materials. Currently, Indonesia produces BBN in the form of biodiesel from palm oil.

Based on data compiled by the Energy Institute, Indonesia is recorded as the third largest biofuel producer globally, having produced 174,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (BOEPD) in 2022.

The largest global biofuel producer is the United States, which produced 728,000 BOEPD throughout last year.

Brazil follows in second place, producing 409,000 BOEPD of biofuel in 2022.

Besides Indonesia, several Asian countries also contribute significantly to global biofuel production, including China, India, and Thailand, with production volumes as shown in the graph.

According to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), biofuel plays a crucial role in long-term sustainable renewable energy solutions.

Indonesia itself has implemented B35 (35% biodiesel) and will continue to increase it to B40 by 2030 and E50 by 2050.

"Biofuel plays an important role in the energy transition, particularly in the decarbonization of transportation by providing low-carbon solutions for existing technologies, such as vehicles, ships, and aircraft," said the Director General of New, Renewable, and Energy Conservation (EBTKE), Yudo Dwinanda Priaadi, through the ESDM Ministry website on Wednesday (3/8/2023).
