According to data from the Indonesian Ministry of Manpower (Kemnaker), 57,923 employees experienced layoffs (PHK) in Indonesia between January and November 2023.
During this period, the highest number of layoffs occurred in West Java (17,545 people), Central Java (9,374 people), and Banten (8,776 people).
However, this data does not reflect the total number of layoffs nationwide.
This is because Kemnaker only records layoffs reported by companies through the Manpower Service Information and Application System and/or the Industrial Relations Court.
The actual number of layoffs may be higher, as some companies may have conducted layoffs but have not yet reported them.
The current number of layoffs appears to be higher than what Kemnaker has recorded.
According to the Nusantara Workers' Union Confederation (KSPN), in December 2023, two textile factories in Central Java conducted mass layoffs.
"Currently, there is a process of laying off hundreds of yarn and fabric factory workers in Semarang City," said KSPN President Ristadi, as reported by *CNBC Indonesia* on Friday (29/12/2023).
"Then there's also a garment company in Semarang City that is in the process of negotiating severance pay. Around 5,000 workers have been laid off," said Ristadi.
