The latest report from Indonesia's Central Statistics Agency (BPS) shows that the national open unemployment rate (TPT) in August 2023 reached 5.32%. This figure is down 0.54 percentage points or 9.21% compared to February 2023, which was 5.86%.
BPS notes that the unemployment rate decreased in urban areas but increased in rural areas.
In August 2023, the urban unemployment rate was 6.4%, down from 7.74% in August 2022. On the other hand, the rural unemployment rate in August 2023 reached 3.88%, up from 3.42% in August 2022.
Based on gender, the unemployment rate for both men and women decreased over the past year. However, the male unemployment rate was higher at 5.42%, while the female unemployment rate was 5.15% in August 2023.
Looking at the regional distribution, 10 provinces had unemployment rates above the national average, while 24 provinces were below the average.
Banten remained the province with the highest open unemployment rate nationally in August 2023, at 7.52%. However, this figure decreased from 8.09% in August 2022.
Below Banten are West Java, Riau Islands, DKI Jakarta, and Maluku, with the second to fifth highest national unemployment rates.
Meanwhile, West Sulawesi had the lowest unemployment rate in Indonesia at only 2.27%, down from 2.34% in August 2022.
