According to data from the Ministry of Manpower (Kemnaker), 37,375 employees experienced layoffs (PHK) across Indonesia between January and August 2023.
Cumulatively, in the first eight months of this year, the highest number of layoffs occurred in West Java (14,267 people), Central Java (6,430 people), and Banten (6,047 people).
However, this data does not reflect the entirety of national layoff cases.
This is because Kemnaker only records layoffs reported by companies through the Manpower Service Information and Application System and/or the Industrial Relations Court.
The actual number of layoffs may be higher, as some companies may have conducted layoffs but have not yet reported them.
Currently, the actual number of layoffs is estimated to be higher than the Kemnaker data.
In early October 2023, the President of the Nusantara Workers' Union Confederation (KSPN), Ristadi, stated that 4,584 workers in six textile companies across Banten, West Java, and Central Java had been laid off.
Ristadi also stated that the potential for mass layoffs in the textile industry continues due to various factors, ranging from factories unable to compete with the influx of imported products to the decline in export performance.
"This condition is still ongoing, and around 26,540 workers have been furloughed, heading towards layoffs. This data is as of August 2023," said Ristadi, as reported by CNN Indonesia on Friday, October 6, 2023.
