According to the Indonesian National Civil Service Agency (BKN), the number of civil servants (PNS) in Indonesia reached 3.89 million in December 2022.
This number decreased by approximately 105,000 people, or 2.6%, compared to 2021 (year-on-year/yoy), marking the lowest level in the last decade.
"There has been a general decrease in the number of civil servants. However, there has been an increase in the number of civil servants working in central government institutions, while the number of civil servants in regional institutions has decreased," stated the BKN in its report, *Civil Servant Statistics December 2022*.
In 2022, the number of civil servants working in regional government institutions was approximately 3.29 million (77%).
Meanwhile, the number of civil servants in central government institutions was 959,860 (23%).
Amidst this decrease in employees, the government plans to open recruitment for prospective civil servants (CASN) and government employees with work agreements (PPPK).
The Ministry of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform (Kemenpan-RB) stated that the 2023 CASN and PPPK recruitment has four policy directions, namely:
1. Focus on basic services (teachers and health workers);
2. Provide opportunities for digital talent (data scientists);
3. Highly selective recruitment; and
4. Reducing recruitment for positions that will be impacted by digital transformation.
"The government is currently analyzing which positions may be affected by digital developments," said Minister of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform Abdullah Azwar Anas in his press release at the end of last year (26/12/2022).
"Because the digital world is changing rapidly, the government must also adapt quickly to avoid being left behind," he added.
According to Alex Denni, Deputy for Human Resources of the Kemenpan-RB, recruitment will open in the middle of this year.
"God willing, at the end of June, at the latest July, we can open the 2023 ASN recruitment. For official information, please refer to the official Kemenpan-RB and BKN websites," said Alex, as reported by *Kompas.com* (6/4/2023).
