Over 50% of Indonesian Youth Worked in the Service Sector in 2021

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reports that more than half, or 55.8%, of Indonesian youth worked in the service sector in 2021. The percentage of urban youth working in the service sector was higher than that of rural youth, at 66.5% compared to 41.27%.

Youth working in the industrial sector ranked next at 25.02%. Meanwhile, 19.18% of Indonesian youth worked in the agricultural sector.

BPS data also shows that 18 out of every 100 working youth have entrepreneur status. Self-employed youth dominate the youth entrepreneur status, reaching 69.14% in 2021.

Other activities undertaken by youth include schooling, managing the household, and others. Approximately 17% of youth spend the most time schooling. Not significantly different from the percentage of youth attending school, 16.58% of youth primarily manage the household.

Schooling and working are considered productive activities because they add economic value. By working, youth can earn wages, while youth pursuing education will earn an income later when they work.
