The COVID-19 pandemic devastated many business sectors, and women experienced greater job losses than men during this period.
This was reported by the World Bank in its 2022 Women, Business, and the Law report.
According to the World Bank, women are generally more concentrated in sectors requiring high physical contact, such as food service, cleaning, and others.
Therefore, when countries implemented social restrictions to prevent virus transmission, sectors employing predominantly women were disproportionately affected.
A similar phenomenon was highlighted by the International Labour Organization (ILO).
The ILO estimated that approximately 113 million women worldwide lost their jobs or stopped working during the first year of the pandemic, compared to only 13 million men.
ASEAN Women's Labor Force Participation Decreased, Except in Thailand
According to data from the World Bank's World Development Indicators, the most significant decline in women's labor force participation in Southeast Asia occurred in the Philippines.
In 2019, women's labor force participation in the Philippines was 46.5%. However, this dropped to 42.62% in 2020, a decrease of 8.35%.
Similar trends were observed in Myanmar, Singapore, and Cambodia, with decreases ranging from 3% to 5.6% in 2020.
Women's labor force participation in Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, and Laos saw smaller declines, ranging from 1% to 1.5%. Vietnam and Malaysia experienced decreases of less than 1% in 2020.
Thailand was the only Southeast Asian country to experience growth, albeit slight, in this area.
In 2019, women's labor force participation in Thailand was 59.02%. This increased to 59.21% in 2020, a rise of 0.31%.
The ILO predicts that women will continue to face similar pressures in 2022 as they did in 2020. The ILO recommends that countries design specific policy packages and investments to support women's economic recovery and improvement.
