This is evident from the report of the Katadata Indonesia Middle Class Insight (KIMCI) released by the Katadata Insight Center (KIC).

KIC found that out of 1,000 middle-class people surveyed, nearly half or 46.3% have side jobs outside their main job.

According to KIC, this phenomenon reflects the economic pressures faced by the middle class.

"With the existing pressures, relying on a single source of income is no longer considered sufficient, so side jobs have now become a necessary defense mechanism to plug financial gaps," said KIC in its report.

"The main motivation in running side jobs still stems from the need to strengthen financial resilience, especially to increase income to meet living needs and add savings," he continued.

KIC conducted this survey in the fourth quarter of 2025-first quarter of 2026 on 1,000 respondents in Indonesia aged between 18 and 60 years.

All respondents were classified as middle class, with an expenditure range of between Rp2 million to Rp10 million per capita per month.
