A report from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) shows that 9.8% of the total workforce in Indonesia had the status of independent workers or freelancers in August 2025.
During that period, the average freelancer had a net income of Rp1.68 million per month.
BPS defines independent workers as individuals who work for others on a non-permanent basis in both agricultural and non-agricultural sectors.
Based on demographics, the province with the highest average national income for independent workers was Papua Pegunungan. Meanwhile, NTB had the lowest.
Below is a list of the 10 provinces with the highest average net income for independent workers across Indonesia in August 2025:
- Papua Pegunungan: Rp3.18 million per month
- DKI Jakarta: Rp3.13 million
- Papua: Rp2.96 million
- Southwest Papua: Rp2.95 million
- Central Papua: Rp2.76 million
- Riau Islands: Rp2.74 million
- East Kalimantan: Rp2.64 million
- West Papua: Rp2.643 million
- Central Kalimantan: Rp2.5 million
- Bali: Rp2.29 million
Meanwhile, here is a list of the 10 provinces with the lowest average net income for independent workers nationally:
- NTB: Rp1.03 million per month
- NTT: Rp1.16 million
- East Java: Rp1.49 million
- Gorontalo: Rp1.49 million
- DI Yogyakarta: Rp1.55 million
- Central Java: Rp1.56 million
- West Java: Rp1.59 million
- West Sulawesi: Rp1.59 million
- Central Sulawesi: Rp1.66 million
- Lampung: Rp1.69 million
Furthermore, by sector, independent workers in the industrial sector nationally had the highest average net income, at Rp2.04 million per month.
The average income for independent workers in the services sector was Rp1.86 million per month, and in the agricultural sector, it was Rp1.36 million per month.
