According to a February 2025 report by Indonesia's Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), 145.77 million Indonesians were employed, a 2.5% year-on-year (yoy) increase compared to February of the previous year.
However, this growth was not evenly distributed across all sectors.
The sector with the highest employment growth at the beginning of this year was professional, scientific, and technical activities.
Based on the Indonesian Standard Industrial Classification (KBLI), this sector includes services related to law, accounting, management consulting, architecture, engineering, technical analysis and testing, scientific research and development, market research, and so on.
In February 2025, the number of employed people in the professional, scientific, and technical activities sector reached 2.53 million, a 14.5% yoy increase.
Meanwhile, the growth in the number of employed people in other sectors was less than 10% yoy.
Overall, however, only 13 business sectors experienced growth. Three sectors experienced a decline in employment, particularly the mining and quarrying sector.
The number of people employed in the mining and quarrying sector in February 2025 decreased by 3.5% yoy to 1.64 million.
One sector remained stagnant: electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply. In February 2025, the number of people employed in this sector was approximately 0.36 million, unchanged from the previous year.
