This is recorded in the September 2024 edition of the *Labor Market Brief* report released by the Institute for Economic and Community Research, Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Indonesia (LPEM FEB UI).

According to the report, among unemployed Gen Z workers, 36.17% were high school (SMA/equivalent) graduates, and 29.6% were vocational high school (SMK/equivalent) graduates.

"This large proportion indicates that upper secondary school graduates face the most significant challenges in entering the workforce," wrote the LPEM FEB UI team in their report.

"This is consistent with reports from the Central Bureau of Statistics and various studies stating that high school or vocational high school graduates often lack skills that match industry demands," they continued.

LPEM FEB UI also noted that in 2023, around 600,000 (1.47%) Gen Z workers were discouraged workers.

This discouraged group is not actively seeking employment because they feel their chances of being hired are very slim.

"Frequently cited reasons include a lack of work experience, skills mismatch with market needs, and age-related stigma, with prospective employers considering them too young or too old," said the LPEM FEB UI team.

"This condition reflects structural barriers and negative perceptions that make it difficult for some people to enter the workforce," they continued.
