A report from the Indonesian Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) shows that the percentage of the population working in the informal sector reached 59.31% in 2022. This figure shows a slight decrease from 2021, which reached 59.45%.
Broken down by last education level, elementary school (SD) graduates were the largest group working in the informal sector, with a percentage of 80.32% in 2022. This figure shows a slight increase from the previous year's figure of 80.26%.
The second largest group of graduates working in the informal sector were junior high school (SMP) graduates, with 66.91%. This figure shows a significant increase compared to 2021, which was 67.3%.
Next, there are senior high school (SMA) graduates with a percentage of 49.33%. This percentage decreased from 51.40% in 2021.
In addition, vocational high school (SMK) graduates accounted for 38.17% of those working in the informal sector. This figure is down from 39.87% in 2021.
Meanwhile, university graduates had the lowest percentage, with 18.39% working in the informal sector. This achievement decreased from 18.9% in 2021.

BPS explains that those working with the employment status of self-employed, employing unpaid family workers, independent workers, and unpaid family workers are considered informal workers.
BPS states that workers in this sector are very vulnerable.
"People working in informal activities are generally workers who lack social protection, legal basis for work, or decent wages," wrote BPS in its report.
The calculation of the proportion of the population working in informal activities is the number of people working in informal activities divided by the number of working people, multiplied by 100%. This report is included in the *Decent Work Indicators in Indonesia 2022*.
