According to data from the Ministry of Manpower (Kemnaker), 42,277 employees experienced layoffs (PHK) across Indonesia between January and September 2023.
Cumulatively, by the end of the third quarter of this year, the most layoffs occurred in West Java (14,601 people), Central Java (7,821 people), and Banten (6,059 people).
However, this data does not reflect the entirety of national layoff cases.
This is because Kemnaker only records layoffs reported by companies through the Manpower Service Information and Application System and/or the Industrial Relations Court.
The actual number of layoffs may be higher, as some companies may have conducted layoffs but have not yet reported them.
The actual number of layoffs may currently be higher than what Kemnaker has recorded.
According to the President of the Nusantara Workers' Union Confederation (KSPN), Ristadi, a new wave of layoffs occurred in the textile industry until October 2023.
"One more company conducted layoffs this year, affecting 1,500 employees. So, from January to October 2023, there were 7 companies with a total of approximately 6,500 layoffs," said Ristadi to CNBC Indonesia on Thursday (2/11/2023).
Ristadi did not disclose the names of these companies. However, he stated that the wave of layoffs in textile factories was triggered by various factors, such as companies unable to survive amidst the influx of imported products, and the slump in export performance.
