Sea Group conducted a survey of 14,000 respondents under the age of 36. The results, released in April 2019, show that entrepreneurship is the most popular career choice among young Indonesians, at 24.4%.

The second most popular career preference for young Indonesians is government/civil service (17.1%), followed by working in a family business (16.5%), multinational companies (11.4%). A significant portion also chose to work in charities/social organizations (9.5%), large local companies (8.8%), and SMEs (7.1%). Working in a startup was the least popular choice, at only 5.2%.

This preference for entrepreneurship as a primary career choice is also seen in other ASEAN countries, namely Thailand (35.9%), Malaysia (25.8%), Vietnam (24.8%), Singapore (20.2%), and the Philippines (19.4%). Indonesia ranks fourth after Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam.
