The Ministry of Manpower (Kemenaker) reported 347,855 workplace accidents involving wage-earning workers up to 2023. Meanwhile, there were 19,921 workplace accidents involving non-wage-earning workers (BPU) and 2,971 cases involving construction workers during the same period.
Wage-earning workers (PU) are those who receive salaries or wages from an employer. This BPJS Ketenagakerjaan group includes Civil Servants (ASN), private employees, state-owned enterprise employees, and others who formally receive wages from an employer.
This differs from BPUs who work independently, such as business owners, artists, and freelancers. There are also informal sector workers such as farmers, public transportation drivers, traders, online motorcycle taxi drivers, fishermen, and domestic workers (PRT).
The province with the highest number of workplace accidents involving wage-earning workers is West Java, with 62,808 cases up to 2023. The number of workplace accident claims in this province was also the highest nationally, at Rp567.75 billion in the same year.
East Java is second highest with 53,319 cases. The realization of workplace accident handling from BPJS Ketenagakerjaan in this province reached Rp403.16 billion.
Third is Central Java, with 40,589 cases. The realization of workplace accident handling reached Rp117.06 billion.
This is followed by Banten (28,989 cases) and Riau (28,329 cases) in fourth and fifth place.
In addition, provinces with low numbers of workplace accidents involving wage-earning workers include West Sulawesi (57 cases), East Nusa Tenggara (172 cases), and Maluku (183 cases).
The Ministry of Manpower processed this data from BPJS Ketenagakerjaan. The number of workplace accident cases is taken from the Work Accident Insurance (JKK) program up to 2023.
Based on Minister of Manpower Regulation Number 26 of 2015, a workplace accident is an accident that occurs in the context of work, including accidents during commutes from home to work or vice versa, and occupational diseases (PAK).
Occupational diseases (PAK) are diseases caused by work activities and/or the work environment. There are five categories of causes of PAK:
1. Physical factors: Extreme temperatures, noise, lighting, air pressure, etc.
2. Chemical factors: Chemical substances in the form of dust, vapor, gas, solutions, etc.
3. Biological factors: Bacteria, viruses, fungi, etc.
4. Ergonomic factors: Lifting heavy objects, awkward working positions, static working positions, repetitive movements, etc.
5. Psychosocial factors: Excessive workload, monotonous work, stress from interpersonal relationships in the workplace, work location, etc.
