National High School Science Examination Scores in 22 Provinces Below the National Average

Based on data from the Ministry of Education and Culture, the average Computer-Based National Examination (UNBK) score for Science (IPA) high schools (SMA) was 52.43 for the 2018/2019 academic year. Twenty-two provinces had UNBK scores below the national average. Only 12 provinces scored above the national average.

The highest UNBK score was achieved by DKI Jakarta Province with a score of 69.9, while the lowest was recorded by North Maluku Province with a score of 42.74. This means there was a 24.16-point disparity between the UNBK results in Jakarta and North Maluku. Several provinces in eastern Indonesia were among the lowest performers, as shown in the graph below.

For information, the number of UNBK participants in the 2018/2019 academic year totaled 959,182 students from 14,065 educational institutions. Mathematics achieved the lowest average score, at 38.68, while Indonesian Language had the highest, at 69.7.
