Distribution of Islamic Boarding School Students in Sidoarjo, East Java

A total of 54 people have been reported dead due to the collapse of the Al Khoziny Islamic Boarding School building in Buduran District, Sidoarjo Regency, East Java, as of Monday (October 6, 2025) at 2:00 PM Western Indonesian Time (WIB).

The building collapse occurred on Monday, September 29, 2025. According to various sources, the three-story building served as the pesantren's prayer room (musala).

A week later, the evacuation process for victims is still being carried out by the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) along with several stakeholders, using heavy equipment. There have been no signs of life for the past few days, but officers continue to search for victims who may still be trapped under the rubble.

Al Khoziny, established in 1927, is one of 12 Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) operating in Buduran District. According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Sidoarjo Regency, the number of students (santri) studying at pesantren in that district in 2022 reached 2,004.

That number is likely to increase this year, given that no updated data has been released by the Sidoarjo Regency BPS. Nevertheless, even in that year, the number of santri in Buduran was the second highest after Tanggulangin, which had 2,317 santri.

Meanwhile, the third district with the highest number of santri in the region was Krian District, with 1,793 santri.

In total, 14,965 santri resided in pesantren in Sidoarjo Regency in 2022. The number of pesantren reached 180 units.
