The Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) is one of the provinces with special rights due to its contribution to the independence of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia.
After Soekarno proclaimed Indonesian independence on August 17, 1945, Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX and Adipati Paku Alam VIII decided to become part of Indonesia on September 5, 1945. This decision was significant for Indonesia because it provided a tangible territory and population for the newly independent nation.
Yogyakarta's role in the era of the independence revolution extended beyond this initial decision. The Sultanate and Principality, along with the people of Yogyakarta, actively worked to maintain, develop, and safeguard the integrity of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI).
In recognition of the Sultanate of Yogyakarta's services, the government granted special rights to the DI Yogyakarta region. These include the appointment of the Governor and Deputy Governor of DI Yogyakarta from among those holding the thrones of Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono and Adipati Paku Alam.
DI Yogyakarta also receives special funds annually from the State Budget (APBN). This funding is separate from the central government's regional transfer funds.
According to data from the Ministry of Finance, Yogyakarta's special funds reached Rp1 trillion starting in 2018, as shown in the graph. These funds increased to Rp1.32 trillion starting in 2020.
DIY Province covers an area of 3,173 square kilometers, administratively divided into four regencies and one city, with a population of 3.68 million as of June 2022.
For information, President Joko Widodo inaugurated Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X and KPAA Paku Alam as Governor and Deputy Governor of DIY for the 2022-2027 term. The appointment of the Governor and Deputy Governor of DIY is determined in accordance with the Special Region of Yogyakarta Law Number 13 of 2012.
