A recent Kompas Research and Development (Litbang Kompas) poll compiled several strategies employed by Indonesians to cope with soaring daily necessities prices during Ramadan.

The survey revealed that 40.1% of respondents countered this by cooking their own meals for breaking the fast (buka puasa) and pre-dawn meal (sahur).

“Amidst the surge in staple food prices, this strategy helps the public purchase food according to their budget,” wrote Kompas Litbang researcher Agustina Purnawanti in her report on Wednesday, March 27, 2024.

Next, 21.3% of respondents prioritized their family's basic needs and tended to control other expenses.

Furthermore, 12% opted for shopping at low-cost markets; 10.2% sought discounted/promotional food; and 9.4% purchased food supplies before Ramadan.

Other strategies employed by respondents to deal with rising prices during Ramadan included seeking free takjil (Ramadan snacks) (2.2%); relying on government assistance (1.1%); and borrowing money to meet their needs (0.5%).

“These diverse methods were adopted to celebrate Ramadan, a month of blessings and togetherness, even in simplicity and challenging circumstances,” wrote the Kompas Litbang researcher.

This Kompas Litbang survey involved 505 respondents randomly selected using a stratified systematic sampling method across 38 Indonesian provinces.

Data collection was conducted from March 18-20, 2024, through telephone interviews. The survey's margin of error is approximately 4.36% with a 95% confidence level, under simple random sampling conditions.
